MILTON — Edgewood got the best of Milton Thursday night in a Badger Conference volleyball game at Milton High School. The Crusaders (17-6, 5-1 Badger Small) defeated the Red Hawks in three sets 25-18, 25-23, 25-14.
Leading Milton in digs was Elise Wieters with 20. Emme Dummer had 17 assists, Molly Baker led in kills with 10 and Zoey Keltner added four. Kylee Buttchen recorded two aces and Dummer, along with freshman Hadley Murphy secured five blocks.
The first set was back and forth volleyball until the Crusaders pulled away late. The set featured 11 ties. Edgewood built a 4-2 advantage but a block by Murphy and a serve by Wieters helped tie the set. The Crusaders led 8-6, but two errors tied the set again. The Red Hawks led 13-12 and 16-15, but a 10-2 run by the Crusaders is how the set ended.
With the loss, Milton’s overall record is 19-11 and the Red Hawks are still 4-2 against Badger Large Conference opponents.
“I think we played well, but we could have finished when the game started getting close,” Dummer said.
Both Dummer and Milton head coach Katie Kinman said Edgewood’s setter, Addie Oeth, made it tough on the Red Hawks.
“They ran a really fast offense,” Kinman said, “which is kind of like Waunakee, when we played them their fast offense was hard to stop. I think we improved in our blocking and had great set blocks at times, but their setter was also fantastic.”
Milton started the set second on a 4-1 run, using a block from Murphy and a kill by Baker to do so. Edgewood came storming back to tie the set at four. The set was tied 11 times, and although Milton led 20-19, Edgewood still secured a 25-23 win.
The final set, which ended 25-14, the Red Hawks led 6-3, but the Crusaders answered back on a 17-4 run.
“We just need to continue to work as a team,” Kinman said. “Emme is a great setter but just court awareness and continuing to build her confidence and her setting awareness to mix up our swings more. Also, just working on a faster block tempo, which we have a freshman block right now.”
Milton travels to Beaver Dam Tuesday, Oct. 7 for a match at 7 p.m.
