Edgerton, Milton and Janesville Craig’s Alexis Hanson are set to compete at the 2025 54th annual WIAA girls golf state championships on today-and-Tuesday, Oct. 13-14 at Madison’s University Ridge Golf Course.
Edgerton
The Crimson Tide won’t be satisfied with just participating, rather the Rock Valley Conference champions have their eyes set on a Division 2 championship. And, Why shouldn’t they? Division 2 power and 16-time state champ Madison Edgewood was bumped up to Division 1 starting this season in the WIAA’s competitive-balance shift. Edgerton won the WIAA sectional at Meadowbrook Country Club in Racine last Monday with a 367.
“We’re looking to win,” coach Alex Schaar said. “I think that’s kind of the point. We’ve definitely got the team to do it. And I’m not trying to discount any other team because there’s some really solid teams there… but if anyone’s going to compete with them it’s going to be us.”
Freshman Kennedy Kern shot an 83 at sectionals to tie for first place. Junior Claudia Jenny shot an 87 and finished in fourth place.
“They’ve been playing really good golf lately,” Schaar said. “And Kenna (Cooper) is going to snap back and put up the score that she’s normally been hitting.”
Norah Kluck and Lauren Richards round out the Crimson Tide’s lineup card. Jenny will be Edgerton’s only golfer that has not played University Ridge.
“So we’re going in there with some experience,” Schaar said.
While the Crimson Tide’s goal is to win, Schaar wants his team to just enjoy the experience and have fun. He also said Edgerton as a city is excited to support the team.
Milton
The Red Hawks shot a 386 in their sectional at Oakwood Park Golf Club in Franklin. While Edgerton will be competing in Division 2, Milton will be competing in Division 1.
“I think this is going to be an eye-opening experience for us, just with the vast competition around us,” Milton coach Ashton Gouvion said. “So I’m really just going in with the mentality that we give our all the first day and make ourselves improve the second day.”
At sectionals, Elliana Ostertag scored an 88 to place third overall. Piper Williams shot a 94, Lara Spielmann produced a 99, Nayeli Kilen shot a 105, and Ellie Johnson shot a 118.
“My biggest hope is just that they enjoy the experience and learn from it as it’s one that I think will help us be successful in future seasons with our young team,” Gouvion added.
Alexis Hanson
Craig’s Alexis Hanson, a senior, shot a state-qualifying score of 92 in the same Franklin sectional as Milton. She will be the lone Cougar competing in the state championship.
“Alexis is hoping to finish out her senior year at state with just an enjoyable experience,” Craig golf coach Stefanie Hanson said. “Our state has some really impressive golfers every year, so just to be a part of it is a great experience.”
As a team, Craig qualified last year. Hanson shot a 106 on Day 1 and a 104 on Day 2.
“Having golfed at University Ridge when the team went to State last year already helps to get an idea of how the tournament runs. It takes the anxiety of the unknown out of the equation,” coach Hanson said.
