The Whitewater Common Council named three finalists for the position of city manager on Wednesday. They are Jim Palenick, David R. Porter and John S. Weidl.
Palenick held the same post in Middletown, Ohio, a city of about 48,000 in the southwestern part of the state. He has more than 34 years of experience in service to local government as a top executive official in several municipal governments, including a stint as city administrator in Racine. Palenick has master’s and bachelor’s degrees in public administration from Western Michigan University.
Porter is the village administrator in Winneconne near Oshkosh. He has a history degree and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard. He previously worked for the town of Wayland, Massachusetts; Trisector Advisors in Brookline, Massachusetts; the Center for Public Leadership in Cambridge, Massachusetts; for EDX, Inc. in Cambridge Massachusetts; The Readiness Project in Washington; for Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP in Washington; and for Bancroft Associates in Washington.
John Weidl is the currently serving as interim city manager for Whitewater and is a town supervisor for the town of LaFayette, Wisconsin. He lives in Elkhorn. He has previously worked in municipal government in Mukwonago, Princeton and Lake Zurich, Illinois. Weidl is a U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Europe and Middle East. He has a history degree and a master’s degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University.
Interviews for the three candidates will take place Friday. A community reception for the finalists will be held at City Hall, 312 W. Whitewater St., from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday evening. The event is open to the public. The common council will also hold further interviews with the candidates and deliberate Saturday.
