The long-awaited trade deal between the South American bloc Mercosur and the European Union is finally on, at least provisionally. The initiative creates a trans-Atlantic market estimated at $22 trillion, with 720 million potential consumers. Some nations expect to boost their exports by more than 10% once it is fully implemented in 2038. The European Commission president’s move to sidestep the EU Parliament to provisionally enact the deal is being challenged by EU lawmakers at the bloc’s judiciary. The agreement will be halted if the European body rules against it.

A Tennessee solar developer is betting that cattle-grazing and solar panels can coexist — and benefit farmers as well as the electric grid. Silicon Ranch has debuted a 40-acre solar and cattle farm outside of Nashville, where it will spend the next year working to prove the concept works, and persuading farmers to give it a try. It's fairly common now to see sheep grazing at solar sites, but cattle have been too big to fit safely underneath. Silicon Ranch has developed a software system that rotates the panels close to horizontal when cattle are grazing, giving them room to roam.
