LeBron James had 28 points and the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated Houston with a 98-78 win in Game 6 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series by holding the Rockets to a season low in points. The No. 4 seed Lakers move on to meet the top-seeded Thunder with Game 1 Tuesday in Oklahoma City. Los Angeles has advanced to the second round for the first time since 2023 when it lost to Denver in the West finals despite missing top scorer Luka Doncic for the entire series.

Jacob Misiorowski’s bid for a no-hitter quickly faded as the biggest news for the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-foot-7 right-hander when a hamstring injury forced him to leave a 6-1 win at Washington. Misiorowski worked 5 1/3 innings hitless innings with eight strikeouts and two walks before leaving the game due to a right hamstring cramp. The 24-year-old Misiorowski departed after throwing a fastball to James Wood. After delivering the pitch, Misiorowski caught the return throw from catcher William Contreras and then walked off the mound. Following a discussion with manager Pat Murphy and trainer Brad Epstein, Misiorowski left the field.

Seattle Mariners third baseman Brendan Donovan will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Arkansas on Monday. Donovan left Seattle’s 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers on April 17 with a left hip issue, and then was placed on the 10-day injured list three days later with a left groin muscle strain. Donovan was also dealing with right groin discomfort in early April and suggested it might be related to an Oct. 7 sports hernia surgery. General manager Justin Hollander said Friday that the plan is for the 2025 All-Star to join the Mariners on their road trip to Chicago on May 8.

Anthony Volpe is ready to rejoin the New York Yankees, but the team isn’t set for the shortstop’s return. With José Caballero playing well, the Yankees kept Volpe at Double-A Somerset on Friday rather than activate him for a series opener against Baltimore. Manager Aaron Boone said Volpe will remain at Somerset through Sunday, the maximum 20th day of a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. After that, the Yankees would have to activate the 2023 Gold Glove winner or option the 25-year-old to the minors.

The Edmonton Oilers exited the playoffs early this season after two marathon runs to the Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers lost 5-2 to Anaheim in Game 6 on Thursday, ending their season in the first round. Injuries to key players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl weakened the team. Edmonton's defense struggled, allowing 26 goals in six games. The penalty kill and power play were inconsistent. Coach Kris Knoblauch said the team didn't defend well enough.

The Celtics appeared to be skipping toward the second round of the NBA playoffs following a 32-point road win in Game 4 at Philadelphia. But back-to-back convincing wins by the 76ers in Game 5 and Game 6 have left a Boston team that once looked like a favorite to emerge from the Eastern Conference on the brink of an epic collapse. Star Jayson Tatum left early in Game 6 with what he said was simply a stiff left calf. Both he and coach Joe Mazzulla said he'll play in Game 7. The Celtics have long had the Sixers’ number in the playoffs, winning the last six series. The 76ers last eliminated the Celtics in the 1982 Eastern Conference semifinals.

For the first time since joining the Big Ten, Washington will try to keep up with the rest of the conference’s best rushing teams without one of the most prolific running backs in program history. The Huskies lost Jonah Coleman, who ran for 15 touchdowns last season, to the Denver Broncos in the NFL draft. And not only has Coleman departed the program, but last season’s leading returning rusher among running backs, Jordan Washington, is out indefinitely with a neck injury he sustained on April 4.
