Brazil great Ronaldinho has signed with Italian Serie C club Ravenna at age 46 and more than a decade after retiring. Ronaldinho says “I cannot wait to dance with the ball” and “let the magic begin” The Ravenna club is run by Ignazio Cipriani of the Cipriani restaurant brand. Cipriani says Ronaldinho was his idol as a kid and ”I hope his involvement inspires a new generation of supporters to fall in love with Ravenna.” Ronaldinho last played professionally for Fluminense in 2015. It will mark his second spell in Italy after playing for AC Milan from 2008-11. He won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 and the Ballon d’Or in 2005.

The International Olympic Committee has committed to paying more than $100 million directly to athletes. It's creating a fund for $10,000 grants they can apply for after competing at a Summer Games or Winter Games. The cash commitment from the IOC comes after growing calls in recent years to pay prize money at the Olympic Games. IOC member and former NBA star Pau Gasol announced the project, which will first be open to nearly 3,000 athletes who competed at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games.

Mirra Andreeva has lost in her first match since winning the French Open. She was beaten in her only grass-court tuneup before Wimbledon by Ekaterina Alexandrova. The two Russian players hugged at the net after Alexandrova beat Andreeva and the heat to win 6-3, 6-4 for a place in the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. In the second set, the French Open champion pulled off a table tennis-style trick shot which had so much backspin it landed on Alexandrova’s side of the court before bouncing back over the net to win Andreeva the point. Alexandrova next faces Naomi Osaka.

Ben Stokes has refused to give assurances on his long-term future as England cricket captain after his latest disciplinary controversy. He says his focus is purely on the upcoming deciding test of the series against New Zealand. Stokes was commenting publicly for the first time since being dropped pending an investigation into an incident at a nightclub after the first test. He didn’t go into details about the controversy, or whether he considered giving up the captaincy or indeed retiring. Stokes also says he doesn’t feel his relationship with coach Brendon McCullum has deteriorated as a result of the events of the past two weeks.

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is scheduled to play an exhibition match amid a heat wave, just under a month after the Italian star struggled with dizziness in a stunning second-round loss at the French Open. Sinner is set to play in the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic against Cameron Norrie with southern England under a “red warning” for extreme heat issued by Britain’s national weather service. The early afternoon temperature in Fulham, where the event is being held, was 33 C and 91.4 F. Defending Wimbledon champion Sinner wore a cooling vest while practising earlier at the All England Club.

In a landmark legal win for female soccer players Maja Göthberg has been awarded salary compensation from Lazio Women after the Italian club ended contract talks when it knew she was pregnant. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ordered Lazio to pay Göthberg more than $79,000, says the global soccer players’ union FIFPRO. Former Sweden youth international Göthberg took her appeal to CAS after losing her initial claim at a FIFA tribunal. She helped Lazio win promotion to the top tier in the 2023-24 season. She then discovered she was pregnant and told the club during contract talks.
