Shares of eBay are soaring before the opening bell after Ryan Cohen's GameStop announced an attempt to take over the company for about $56 billion, seeing it as a vehicle to compete with online retail giant Amazon. GameStop said that its approximately 1,600 U.S. stores could become drop-off and shipping locations. One proposal includes live sales broadcasts from GameStop locations featuring eBay products. The United States is launching an effort to guide stranded ships from the Iran-gripped Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. has recommend they route through Omani waters south of where ships usually transit the waterway. The Joint Maritime Information Center said Monday the U.S. had set up an enhanced security area. The U.S. urged mariners to coordinate closely with Omani authorities due to anticipated high traffic volume passing through the alternative route. The U.S.-led multinational maritime task force is the latest bid to revive traffic and restore confidence among commercial vessels transiting the strait.

The United States is warning shipping companies that they could face sanctions if they pay Iran to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control issued the alert Friday. It adds another layer of pressure in the standoff between the U.S. and Iran over control of the Strait of Hormuz, which typically handles a fifth of the world's oil and gas shipments in peacetime. Iran effectively closed the strait to normal traffic by attacking and threatening to attack ships after the U.S. and Israel launched a war on Feb. 28.

Union Pacific hopes a new application will be enough to persuade regulators that its $85 billion acquisition of Norfolk Southern would be good for the country. The U.S. Surface Transportation Board rejected Union Pacific’s initial application because regulators wanted more details about how the deal would affect the competitive balance between the five remaining major freight railroads and the impact on customers. Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena said the new application makes an even stronger case for the benefits of the merger that he believes would shave a day or two off the delivery time for many shipments because they would no longer have to be handed off between two railroads in the middle of the country.

Small businesses in California are struggling with the effects of tariffs and the war in Iran. Nichole MacDonald, owner of a San Diego bag business, says customers are spending less due to financial strain. Many are choosing cheaper options like denim over leather. Other small retailers face similar challenges, with increased costs and tariff uncertainties. Higher fuel prices have also led to rising shipping costs. Some businesses have had to cut staff and production. The situation is causing a ripple effect, impacting local economies and creating a cycle of reduced work and higher costs. Many fear they may not survive without government support.
