WHITEWATER — The Whitewater Unified School Board opted to put a $30 million referendum question on the April 1 ballot at a meeting Monday.
The school district surveyed the public initially on a $41 million figure, which the public rejected, so the board settled on the $30 million figure.
A preliminary budget presented to the board outlined potential capital maintenance costs and reductions made prior to presenting the adjusted figure.
The preliminary budget gave an estimated cost at Washington Elementary at about $1.3 million. Lakeview Elementary was at about $1.5 million. Lincoln was at about $1.1 million. Each had air handling replacements taken out of their capital maintenance budgets for the referendum proposal. That reduced Washington’s budget by $300,000, Lakeview’s by $75,000 and Lincoln’s by $150,000.
The middle school’s estimated cost in the preliminary budget came in at about $1.5 million, which was after proposals to replace the district office parking lot and a sound system in the gym were removed.
At the high school, a sidewalk replacement was reduced to a $25,000 allowance and air conditioning, estimated at $375,000, was removed.
Also in the budget is replacing the high school tennis courts, and whether to do eight or six courts. If it is eight it is estimated at $875,000 but could go up another $200,000 if a post-tension concrete system is used instead of asphalt. Six courts is estimated at just under $768,000, with an extra $200,000 if a post-tension concrete system is used.
The high school project includes $1.8 million for renovation to the auditorium. That was cut by $325,000 by removing a planned orchestra pit and another $195,000 by removing a choir renovation.
A $5.7 million tech ed renovation with a new greenhouse was reduced by $500,000.
Items still could be cut or added back to the budget if the referendum is passed, Superintendent Caroline Pate-Hefty told the board after a discussion on the items.
With the eight tennis courts, the budget is about $29.9 million. With the six tennis courts, the budget goes down to about $29.8 million.
Each version of the budget has “additional projects” that come out to about $5.2 million, which are for a high school fine arts addition or renovation. An addition for dressing rooms and stage craft is estimated for just over $2 million and a new band classroom addition is estimated for about $3.1 million.
