Earth Day: Rotary Botanical Gardens to host annual celebration

JANESVILLE — Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville will celebrate Earth Day next week with a day of family-friendly activities.

The Earth Day Celebration at the Gardens, 1455 Palmer Dr., will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21. Throughout the day, there will be games, hands-on activities and outdoor family activities. Admission is free.

The fun for kids will include a natural butterfly activity with printouts of butterflies to fill in with items found in nature. There will also be printouts of continents to fill with soil

Another game will include bins labeled “trash,†“recyclable†and “compostable.†Children will be challenged to place items in the right bin. Afterward, they’ll be given a printout to take home with them listing what can be recycled and composted, and what can be thrown in the trash.

There will be a pollinator activity with zinnia plants, said Delaney Sherwood, education coordinator and horticulture assistant for the Gardens. Children will have the chance to take a zinnia plant home, she said.

Ann there will be a visit from Zoozort, a live, in-person exotic animal show provided by Noelle Bezio. Tickets are required for Zoozort, at $5 per person. Shows will be indoors and will be 30-45 minutes long.

An 11 a.m. show on Sunday is sold out. A few tickets are still available for the 12:30 p.m. show. A 2 p.m. show has less than 20 spots available, Sherwood said. Call (608) 752-3885 for ticket information. Registration is required.

“Noelle is a great educator and great with working with kids. She speaks in a way that they understand. You can request specific animals so we did,†Sherwood said.

Animals that will be part of the Zoozort show include Montgomery the Burmese python, Leon the chameleon, Clementine the tortoise, Snowflake the chinchilla and three armadillos, Sherwood said.

For visitors of all ages, there will be a GreenLight E Recycling collection bin set out Sunday for old, outdated, unused or broken electronics. Gaming systems, motors, cords and cables, computer laptops and towers and cell phones will be accepted.

“If it runs off a battery, motor or plug, you will be able to drop it off helping ensure our little corner of the Earth stays greener a bit longer,†a press release from the Gardens said

The Rock County Public Health Department will also be on site for its drug take-back program. Anyone with unwanted medications can drop them off for proper disposal.
