MADISON — Prices at the gas pump are slightly lower that last year and bookings for hotels and air travel are up from last year as travelers prepare for their last trip of the summer on the Labor Day weekend.
The national average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline is $3.827, which is down from $3.90 reported in late August of 2022, according to the AAA website.
In the Beloit/Janesville area is reporting an average gas price of $3.457, down slightly from $3.460 reported last year in late August.
The current average price of gasoline in Wisconsin is $3.597 per gallon, down from $3.615 reported during the Labor Day weekend in 2022.
The lowest gas prices in Wisconsin currently can be found in Portage County, where the average price per gallon is $3.401. The highest gas prices were recorded in Washington County where the price per gallon was $3.798.
Domestic bookings for hotel and air travel is up by 4% compared to last year, according to the AAA website. International cruise bookings are up 44% compared to last year and international hotel bookings are up 82%.
According to AAA, peak travel times are expected from noon — 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m. — 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1 and 10 a.m. — 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4. Motorists can check the website at for road closures and other traffic information.
Motorists are urged to buckle up and put cell phones down as they travel this weekend. The AAA urges people to be patient and check their vehicles before hitting the road. AAA anticipates about 300,000 motorists will be stranded this weekend, mostly due to flat tires, dead batteries or being locked out of their cars.
For those who don’t want to travel far from home this holiday weekend, there is plenty to do in the Stateline Area.
The Beloit Sky Carp baseball team will be hosting their last home games at ABC Supply Stadium, 217 Shirland Ave. The Sky Carp will host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday through Sunday.
People can enjoy a bite to eat and listen to some live music provided by the Stateline Playboys at Fridays in the Park on Friday. The event is set for 11:30 a.m. — 1:30 p.m. at First National Bank Plaza at the corner of State Street and East Grand Avenue. Patrons are asked to bring their own lunch.
The Downtown Beloit Farmers Market will feature dozens of vendors selling produce, baked goods, cheese and more from 8 a.m. — 1 p.m. Saturday on State Street and East Grand Avenue.
For those who enjoy carnival rides, food and music, the Walworth County Fair is continuing through Monday in Elkhorn. The fun can be found at the Walworth County Fairgrounds at 411 E. Court St.
There also will be antique tractors and other activities at the Rock River Thresheree set for Friday through Monday at Thresherman’s Park, 51 E. Cox Road, Edgerton.
