JANESVILLE — A longtime Madison- area Indian restaurant opened its doors Friday at a second location on Milton Avenue in Janesville, bringing some Indian flavor to the city’s northside.
Swad Indian Restaurant opened Friday in the former Sam’s Pizza at 1313 Milton Ave.
Madan Shrestha has owned Swad Indian Restaurant Monona, 6007 Monona Dr., in Monona, for 20 years, and has been in the restaurant business even longer, for 25 years.
There’s demand for an Indian restaurant in Janesville, hrestha said, with an untapped market.
Swad is now the only Indian restaurant in Janesville, with the nearest Indian restaurants in Monona, Delavan, Loves Park and Rockford.
“I have a lot of customers in Janesville, Beloit, Edgerton, Whitewater, Jefferson and Milton. Those customers who go to Madison, they stop by for our dinner and lunch buffet, and they’d like to have it nearby,” Shrestha said.
Shrestha said he chose the location Janesville location and expects it to be successful because of the amount of businesses and traffic on the corridor.
Shrestha has been working on opening since last May. The building was renovated ahead of Friday’s launch. He spent time cooking in the kitchen throughout the day Friday, and was taking reservations as well.
“I was making sure everything was going well,” Shrestha said, adding that lunch hours kept him and his staff of 10 busy.
Swad Indian Restaurant Janesville offers a lunch buffet Friday, Saturday and Sunday, giving guests an idea of what they may like from the broader menu, with mild and spicy options.
On the full menu are 13 chicken curries to choose from, including a chicken tikka masala, which is boneless roasted white meat chicken cooked in mildly spiced creamy tomato sauce.
“If it’s some curry, if it’s chicken tikka masala or chicken curry or lamb or goat or beef, they can order their choice of how spicy they want to have it,” Shrestha said.
Swad also offer 23 vegetarian, eight beef, nine seafood, 10 lamb and three goat curry options. There are eight types of vegetarian appetizers and seven non-vegetarian appetizers as well.
Vegetarian curries include a mutter paneer, a dish of homemade cheese cubes and fresh green peas cooked in mild spices, garnished with fresh cilantro. Beef curries include a beef mango, a dish of cubes of tender beef cooked in a sweet mango sauce with garlic, ginger, tomato, onion and spices.
There are multiple bread options, including white, whole wheat and gluten free, and 14 types of breads topped with items like garlic or ginger, or stuffed with meats, spices or vegetables.
Swad also offer rice specialites” that include items like Swad’s special biryani, Indian basmati rice cooked with shrimp, beef, lamb, chicken and spices garnished with dried fruits.
There are also combination dinners including a vegetarian dinner for two, a non-vegetarian dinner for two or a seafood dinner for two.
Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Dinner is served from 4:30-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday and Friday and Saturday 4:30-9:30 p.m.
“Come down. Try the Indian food. It’s spiced, flavorful food that’s good for your health. So, good for your taste, good for your mental, good for your meditation also because we use lots of spice that’s good for your health,” Shrestha said.
