MILTON Milton Common Council members will receive a pay raise after the April 2028 election.
The pay will be $2,500 per year for the citys alderpersons and $3,000 and for the mayor.
The city considered the item in May but deferred any decision on a pay hike until Tuesday evenings meeting. The common council opted to approve a rate across the board. No council members are allowed to approve raises for themselves in their current terms. The earliest any pay rate hikes could go into effect would be April 2027, but the council decided to approve raises to go into effect in 2028 so they would go into effect all at the same time rather than staggered across two budget years.
The pay adjustment is the first in 20 years.
Prior to the discussion, Mayor Eric Stockman proposed increasing pay for alderpersons and the mayor earlier this year, saying that he wanted to ensure that there was fair compensation.
Alderperson Molly Budlong said the alderpersons and the mayor work hard and should be paid accordingly.
We are underpaid, I guess, for a lack of better words, Budlong said.
Ken Smith voiced opposition in May and again Tuesday.
Things have actually gotten harder for people out there, Smith said. It took $115 to fill my gas tank this week.
Miltons population is 5,718. A 69蹤獲 analysis shows that if the city used an aggregated average pay rate based on its analysis of peer cities, Miltons mayor would make $9,778 annually and council members would earn $5,375 annually.
Currently, the mayor is paid $2,200 annually. Council members are paid $1,200 annually.
Edgertons mayor earns $2,850 annually. Edgerton alderpersons earn $2,500. In Evansville, the mayor earns $5,500.
Council President Derek Henze moved to have a cost of living adjustment, or COLA, approved with the pay raise. However, he withdrew his motion at the request of City Administrator Paul Hensch for further legal review.
