According to the release, Filter will be “stepping down to focus on her family.” Filter had been the Madison principal since 2014. She was named the Herb Kohl Foundation’s top principal in in Wisconsin during the 2021-22 school year.

“We deeply appreciate Principal Filter’s years of dedicated service to our District,” Superintendent Mark Holzman said in the release. “We wish her the very best as she transitions into retirement and focuses on her family.”

The district has not explained the circumstances of the leave or when it began.

Peerenboom, whose Washington Elementary has been closed since the April 17 flooding and won’t open until 2028 at the earliest, has split time between Madison and Adams elementary schools.

“Matt has worked incredibly hard with his staff to improve student results and navigate recent transitions smoothly,” Holzman said. “We have full confidence that he will continue to lead Madison in a positive, successful direction.”

Prior to his time as Washington principal, he served as assistant principal at Edison Middle School for six years, and he spent 12 years at Franklin Middle School where he was a science teacher and dean of students.

The 69 has filed an open records request seeking district records that show full details behind Filter’s initial administrative leave.
