It only took Hitler 51 days to bring down the German Republic and replace its constitutional framework with “the Fuhrer’s word is above all written law.” Hitler used a perceived “state of emergency” to grant him broad power to act outside of parliamentary control.
Hitler quickly used these powers to end constitutional governance, suspend civil liberties that brought about the collapse of German democracy with the creation of a one-party dictatorship.
Trump’s administration will not beat Hitler’s time line but the message is similar: “He who saves his country does not violate any law.” The United States voted at the UN with Russia and North Korea, allowing Russian troops to stay in Ukraine.
This administration, for the first time in history, voted against the prohibition of acquiring another country’s territory by force.
Then we stopped the promised delivery of weapons and intelligence for Ukraine. The United States stands with the aggressor and against the attacked.
This is a stance never seen before in American history. This is peace by capitulation, peace by giving in to the aggressor....”peace by defeat.”
Putin seeks the end of the order in Europe that the United States put in place 80 years ago. The Baltic States, Georgia, Moldova are on Putin’s list once he has Ukraine. Putin’s vision is a return of great powers dictating the fate of small countries.
It appears Trump’s intention is: Greenland, Panama and Canada belong to America, the Baltic States and Eastern Europe are Putin's, while Taiwan and the Far East go to China.
Counting the days with the hope that a free Ukraine and democratic Europe is in our future and the American people will refuse to accept an American vision that aligns with Putin’s dictatorial dream.
