Two issues are top of mind that need attention from our federal officials. Representative Steil thinks the SAFE bill will ensure only citizens vote. It is already required for voter registration and violations carry stiff penalties.
Nearly 70 million women changed their name when we married, as was the custom until very recently. I happen to have a passport, which is fortunate. However, there are many more who do not. Even if your drivers license is in your married name, it may not be acceptable for citizenship.
In the past few years politicians mess around with voting requirements and every time, the result is confusion and declining confidence in our election process. It does nothing to improve the process or participation.
The other is the cold-hearted deportation of people in this country with green cards, education visas, and/or married to American citizens with no criminal records.
My husband, who passed away in 2021, came here after we married in Australia. He immediately qualified for a green card and maintained the revisions and updates as the years went on. He was a staunch British citizen and kept his British passport.
He was always gainfully employed, father of two, grandfather of four and a model citizen. In today’s climate, he could be rounded up for his political views and shipped to an unknown location. This is not what ‘the best country on earth’ is supposed to do.
