Tadej Pogačar has produced an explosive finish to win the first stage of the Spanish Vuelta by edging British rider Ethan Hayter by 0.09 seconds in the opening time trial. Pogačar, who’s bidding to become just the ninth rider to win all three Grand Tours, put himself in position from the offset by completing the highly technical 9.5-kilometer (5.9 mile) course through the streets of Monaco in 10 minutes and 57 seconds. Hayter finished four seconds faster than compatriot Josh Tarling, who was racing just over a week after his younger brother Finlay Tarling was killed after being struck by a vehicle during the Volta a Portugal.
The International Testing Agency says South African cyclist S’annara Grove has been provisionally suspended because of a failed doping test. It says Grove’s sample collected on July 28 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow returned an “adverse analytical finding” for ipamorelin which it says is “a synthetic peptide used to stimulate the body’s natural production of growth hormone.” The ITA says Grove has been informed of the case and has the right to challenge the provisional suspension. The 32-year-old Grove rides professionally for the Smurfit Westrock team and is listed as a competitor in the current Tour of Britain. The third stage of the race was Friday.
Welsh rider Josh Tarling is set to take part in the Spanish Vuelta starting this weekend. It's just over a week after his brother Finlay Tarling was killed in the Volta a Portugal. Netcompany Ineos has named its team for the race and included the 22-year-old time trial specialist Josh. He returns to the Vuelta after making his debut in 2024 and a month after completing his first Tour de France. The 19-year-old Finlay Tarling was killed during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal on Aug. 14 when he was struck by a vehicle that entered the road. The driver reportedly missed the signs from stewards and entered the road going in the opposite direction of the race.

Tadej Pogacar’s pursuit of the Grand Tour hat trick will highlight the Spanish Vuelta that begins this weekend in Monaco. Pogacar won a record-equaling fifth Tour de France title in July, adding to add to his 2024 Giro d’Italia triumph and leaving the Vuelta as the only Grand Tour race he is yet to conquer. It was at the Vuelta in 2019 that Pogacar made his Grand Tour debut as a 20-year-old. The Slovenian hasn’t competed in the Vuelta since then. Pogacar hadn’t committed to the Vuelta by the time the Tour de France ended.
