Chheku Lama ran uphill, urging people to flee when floodwaters hit his village, Khalte, in Nepal's Rasuwa district. None survived. Khalte was a temporary settlement after a 2015 earthquake destroyed nearby villages. It offered little protection from floods, with homes close to the Trishuli River. At least 375 people are missing. Nepal is still recovering from August floods that killed over 1,400 people. Khalte’s destruction highlights the risks of temporary settlements in vulnerable areas. Survivors face uncertainty about where to rebuild, as the government considers resettlement plans.

A preliminary magnitude 6.1 earthquake hit southern Panama Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage. The quake struck around 6:20 p.m. at a depth of 6 miles about 11 miles west of RÃo Grande in the country’s south. The quake comes after two powerful 7.7 and 6.6 magnitude earthquakes and a series of aftershocks roiled southern Panama on Friday afternoon. They collapsed buildings near the epicenter and prompted evacuations across the country.
The United States Geological Survey says a magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck a coastal area of southern Peru. The quake happened Sunday at 8:43 a.m. local time, southeast of the city of Camaná in the department of Arequipa. Peru’s Emergency Operations Center said residents perceived the shaking as ranging from “light to moderate. The agency ruled out tsunami risks and said assessments of vulnerable areas were ongoing. Peru lies along the “Ring of Fire, where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. In August, a magnitude 6.7 quake in the Peruvian Andes left two people injured.
