The Trump administration is moving to end its legal fight to overhaul a popular student loan forgiveness program. The Department of Justice appealed after federal judges ruled in June in favor of advocates who said the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program risked becoming a tool for political retribution. But it dropped two appeals Wednesday in single-sentence joint agreements, which stipulated that each side would pay its own fees. Federal officials provided no explanation, but advocates praised the ruling. The PSLF program was designed to make jobs in government, public schools, fire and police departments, public hospitals and nonprofits more attractive by forgiving loans for qualified employees after a decade’s worth of payments.

President Donald Trump and leading Republicans are trying to leverage widespread riots in France ahead of mid-term congressional elections by making unsubstantiated claims that the social unrest in Europe is caused by Muslim migrants. France has been rocked by violence during nationwide demonstrations over the high cost of living and in support of students’ grievances over underfunded schools. Trump says immigrants to France are to blame. French authorities do not make that connection. It is difficult to know the exact sociological makeup of the protesters. But accounts of the protests and images of the unrest seem to show they are representative of France’s diverse society.
Police have fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse protesters in Tirana, Albania. This marks the eighth day of anti-government demonstrations. Protesters, including students, are demanding lower tuition fees, more investment in education, and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. The protests have turned violent, with rocks and firebombs thrown at police. Similar protests over fuel costs, education, and housing have erupted in other European countries, including France and Italy. In Albania, the protests follow months of protests against a luxury tourism development linked to an investment firm founded by Jared Kushner.
