JANESVILLE — By mid-morning on Saturday at Janesville’s riverfront town square, the air remained crisp, but things were getting warmer — and cozier.

JANESVILLE – Rock County saw rain showers on Saturday, opening day of the Janesville Farmers Market. But while turnout may have been slowed by weather early in the day, vendors said attendance later in the morning and early afternoon more than made up for it.
After a slow, wet start this spring, local farmers are hitting the highpoint of their growing season with hopes of finishing the year strong.
The self-named Ukraine Squad will be at the Janesville Farmers Market in the Town Square, 221 Dodge St., on Saturdays May 21, June 18, July 9, Aug. 13, Sept. 10 and Oct. 1. The market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Hundreds of patrons came and went Saturday from the Janesville Farmers Market’s season opener, a kickoff that featured an even blend of produce sellers, bakers, artisans, farm-fresh meat sellers and food truck operators.
The Janesville Farmers Market added several midyear vendors and lured back a few who had left the market in recent years, and a few longtime vendors said they had their best sales volumes ever at the new ARISE Town Square location, market manager Emily Arthur said.
Vendors and managers at the Janesville Farmer's Market said the market's first day of the season on Saturday at its new location at the downtown town square drew 4,000 to 5,000 people.
Public records reveal the farmers market had wanted to delay a move from North Main Street to the city's newly finished town square for at least a year.
