Mirra Andreeva has lost in her first match since winning the French Open. She was beaten in her only grass-court tuneup before Wimbledon by Ekaterina Alexandrova. The two Russian players hugged at the net after Alexandrova beat Andreeva and the heat to win 6-3, 6-4 for a place in the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. In the second set, the French Open champion pulled off a table tennis-style trick shot which had so much backspin it landed on Alexandrova’s side of the court before bouncing back over the net to win Andreeva the point. Alexandrova next faces Naomi Osaka.
Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is scheduled to play an exhibition match amid a heat wave, just under a month after the Italian star struggled with dizziness in a stunning second-round loss at the French Open. Sinner is set to play in the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic against Cameron Norrie with southern England under a “red warning” for extreme heat issued by Britain’s national weather service. The early afternoon temperature in Fulham, where the event is being held, was 33 C and 91.4 F. Defending Wimbledon champion Sinner wore a cooling vest while practising earlier at the All England Club.

Serena Williams isn't stepping up her tennis return by entering the singles draw at Wimbledon. She's played only two doubles matches recently after nearly four years away from professional tennis and the grass-court Grand Slam starts next week. Williams has accepted wild card invitations for both singles and doubles with sister Venus from the All England Club. ESPN commentator Mary Joe Fernandez calls it “a sign of confidence” that Serena is prepared to enter the sport’s most prestigious tournament without having played a singles match in so long. Fernandez says “if anybody can do it, it’s Serena.” Defending champion Jannik Sinner and seven-time champion Novak Djokovic are the men's favorites.
Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has been suspended for four years for refusing an anti-doping test even though the Czech player cited “mental stress” and fear when the testing agent “rang my door late at night without properly identifying themselves.” The International Tennis Integrity Agency made the announcement saying that Vondrousova refused a test in December and that the decision was reached by an independent tribunal. Vondrousova won Wimbledon in 2023 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 that year. Vondrousova becomes the latest high-profile tennis player involved in a doping case after Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep. Vondrousova’s ban expires June 21, 2030. She can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Wimbledon starts next week.

Frances Tiafoe has beaten fifth-seeded Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American final to win the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. Tiafoe served eight aces and did not face a break point on the way to his first title of the year, his first ever on grass, and his fourth overall. It was only his second win in nine matches against Fritz, who beat him in the U.S. Open semifinals two years ago. The ATP 500 grass-court event in eastern Germany serves as a tune-up for Wimbledon, which starts on June 29.

Former Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti has pulled out of the upcoming grass-court Grand Slam as he continues to recover from a left thigh injury. Musetti’s withdrawal opens up a spot in the main draw for fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini was a Wimbledon finalist in 2021 and is coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open. The injury sustained during the Italian Open in May also made Musetti withdraw from the French Open. He says rehab is going well but "I have not yet been able to begin a full athletic training program, and after careful evaluation, we have come to the difficult conclusion that I will not be able to participate in Wimbledon this year.”
