SUN PRAIRIE — If the start of the second half of the conference season is a litmus test for progress, the Janesville Craig Cougars passed that test with flying colors Wednesday night.
Paced by Yana-Aaliyah Stevens’ 22 points, the Cougars (8-5 overall, 6-3 Big Eight Conference) defeated host Sun Prairie West 66-42 in a girls’ Big Eight Conference high school basketball game.
The Cougars swept the Wolves for the 2025-26 conference season, but Wednesday night’s victory was for more convincing than the Cougars’ home 69-62 triumph on Nov. 20.
Stevens scored nine of Janesville Craig’s first 14 points Wednesday as the Cougars built a 14-5 first-half lead and never looked back. Janesville Craig forced 14 first-half Wolves’ turnovers and built a 37-15 halftime lead, then maintained that lead for the final margin of victory.
Abbie Claas added 15 points while Neveah Johnson and Destinii Green added 11 and nine points respectively. Maci Copley scored 15 points to lead the Wolves (4-10, 3-7).
Janesville Craig takes on Verona in the Martin Luther King weekend event in a 5 p.m. game at Madison East Saturday. The Wildcats are 11-1 overall and ranked No. 7 in Division 1 in the most-recent Bound Wisconsin poll.
