MILTON — One goal was all that Milton needed in a win over Janesville Craig in non-conference girls’ soccer Thursday night at Milton High School.
Milton senior Kaelyn Kanable got an assist from Natalie Kersten in the 22nd minute to put the Red Hawks up 1-0.
“It was kind of a tale of two halves,” Janesville Craig coach Casey Berg said. “We were not tough enough in the first half. We shied away from tackles. We were passive in our approach to loose balls. Milton was beating us to everything. As a result they put our defense under more pressure than necessary and we gave up a goal.”
“It wasn’t a very goal-heavy game, but its not because we didn’t have chances,” Milton coach Ryan Wagner said. “I’m just waiting for us to finally connect on some of these chances when it matters most.”
Milton had eight shots on goal and Craig had three. Red Hawk Hailey Drout was in goal.
Berg said Cougar goalie CJ Breaker had 13 saves. Now, No. 13 seed Craig (5-9-1, 2-6) takes on host and No. 4 seed Verona in a WIAA Regional game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“We will need to be at our best start to finish against Verona on Tuesday if we want to have a chance at the upset,” Berg said.
For Milton (5-5-4,1-4-2), the No. 9 Red Hawks take on Westosha Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“We’ll see what happens next week, but we definitely need to step up to get the win,” Wagner said.
