JANESVILLE– A cash bond was set on Tuesday for a 43-year-old Madison man facing multiple charges in two counties in an alleged plot to poison two women.
The bond for Paul D. VanDuyne Jr., who faces attempted murder charges, was set at $37.5 million, after the district attorney Jason Sanders, representing the State of Wisconsin, requested $25 million.
If bail is posted he must have no contact with Amanda Bade, the 26-year-old Rock County victim, her little sister or any of their family members or the Dane County victim. He must provide an address and remain in his home unless attending doctor appointments or court, and surrender his passport. The court orders Level 4 with GPS monitor supervision through JusticePoint. He must contact JusticePoint within 24 hours of release from custody.
According to Sanders, VanDuyne Jr. is a Princeton education engineer, and his father is the president and CEO of a multinational corporation with 100 locations in the U.S. and Asia.
“So in short, he has access to resources that make rich people jealous.” Sanders said.
Bade, a full-time nursing student who works at a VA hospital, made a statement to the judge explaining how her life was impacted and clarifying she never had a romantic relationship with VanDuyne Jr.
“Paul chose day and night for months on end to erase my future,” Bade said. “When he thought I was dead he moved on to the next girl. I believe my intuition and persistence with detectives while on my deathbed intercepted a massacre.”
Bade spent 38 days recovering in different hospitals after being poisoned.
Her mother also made a statement speaking about the irreparable damage done to their family.
“I fully believe, as he has already tried to end my daughter’s life four times, that he would try again [if bail is posted] with a complete disregard for the risks to the rest of society,” she said.
VanDuyne Jr., and Andrea L. Whitaker, 41, of Madison were each charged on June 19, in Rock County Circuit Court with a series of felonies, including three counts each of attempted first degree intentional homicide with a dangerous weapon and as a party to a crime; one count each of aggravated battery with intention to cause great bodily harm as a party to a crime and using a dangerous weapon; one count each of first degree recklessly endangering safety as a party to a crime and using a dangerous weapon; and one count each of stalking resulting in bodily harm as a party to a crime and using a dangerous weapon.
VanDuyne additionally was charged with two felony counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide and one felony count of stalking in Dane County Circuit Court, filed on June 20. His next scheduled appearance in Dane County Circuit Court is Aug. 4 at 2 p.m., and again in Rock County Circuit Court on July 15, at 3 p.m., according to online court records.
In a release, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office said VanDuyne and Whitaker conspired to gather or create elaborate poisons and to use them to murder the women with whom VanDuyne had prior relationships.
In Dane County, Whitaker was charged on June 20, with two felony counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime and one felony count of harboring or aiding a felon.
The Rock County Sheriff’s Office, the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratories, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the City of Middleton Police Department, the City of Madison Police and Fire Departments, the City of Janesville Fire Department, and the 54th Civil Support Team collaborated on the multi-jurisdictional investigation.
As a result of a collaborated effort, along with the Rock County District Attorney’s Office, arrest warrants for VanDuyne Jr. and Whitaker were issued on Thursday, June 19, and criminal charges were filed that same day.
A GoFundMe has been established for Bade by a family friend saying, “She is unable to work and cannot drive and her car is currently in Police custody as evidence. As you can imagine the Bills are staggering and the family, as well as Amanda, has lost their income trying to care for her.”
