MILTON — The Milton School District may be poised to approve a November referendum question in the next month.
That follows a series of recent community focus group sessions in which officials held discussions with the public about the challenges of state funding.
Superintendent Rich Dahman said during his report at Monday’s school board meeting that the board’s finance committee and the full board will review feedback from those sessions over the next month.
The board is scheduled to meet again on July 22 and Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the district office, 448 E. High St. The finance committee will next meet July 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the district office.
The feedback specifically was from the conclusion of the third meeting when attendees broke out into discussion groups and offered bullet-points takeaways from the event, as well as their opinions of the state of Wisconsin school funding. They were also able to write down questions or requests for the board.
“We plan on spending the next month having some conversations on what are some different options, and whether the board wants to bring a referendum option to the community in November,” Dahman said.
The first community focus group session focused on the state’s system for school funding. The second focused on how the system affects the Milton School District and the third forecast future budgets, and how to address looming budget shortfalls.
“Reach out to us board members and the administrative folks, particularly (Business Director) Ross (MacPherson) and Rich if you have ideas and thoughts relative to our financial future. Share that with us so we can work that in our decision-making process,” School Board President Joe Martin said.
If a referendum question is to appear on the November ballot, it must be approved by the school board at the Aug. 12 meeting.
