JANESVILLE Janesville police have provided details on a crash along Beloit Avenue that killed a 39-year-old Janesville man.
According to Janesville Police Department reports obtained by The 69蹤獲, Sean Casey-Schmidt died Sept. 27 after his Ford Fusion ran off Beloit Avenue and traveled through the former city ice arena property, before careening down a 20-foot embankment and crashing into the north side of the National Guard armory property just south of the old arena.
Police said the crash happened shortly after 1 a.m. Sept. 27. It woke up one neighbor who said a sound like an explosion startled them.
Police said Casey-Schmidts car apparently hit an electrical box, which caused an explosion and a fire on power lines wired into the box.
The car then went down the embankment between the ice arena property and the armory, and hit pavement at the armorys north lot hard enough to gouge the asphalt.
The car then crashed into a garage door on the north side of the armory. One witness driving past became aware of the crash and informed law enforcement. The person reported Casey-Schmidts vehicle to police, telling officers there was a person slumped over inside a vehicle that had hit the armory.
Emergency responders tried to resuscitate Casey-Schmidt on scene but were unable to, according to the reports.
The Rock County Medical Examiners office reported earlier this week that Casey-Schmidt had died as a result of injuries in the accident.
The 69蹤獲 asked the Janesville Police Department for official reports on the fatal crash in an attempt to learn more details.
Casey-Schmidts obituary and details of the gofundme to support his wife and children appeared in Thursdays 69蹤獲.
