JANESVILLE — A local nonprofit is preparing to open a sober living home in Janesville where women can focus on overcoming addiction and achieving long-term independence.
Local nonprofit Rock County Restorations is aiming to open this home at 1404 Center Ave. in Janesville in November, as a sober living home for women, including those with children.
Rita Key, the founder of Rock County Restorations, said the home at 1404 Center Ave. will be able to house up to five women and one family. A house mother will live on-site.
Rock County Restorations currently offers nonresidential recovery services at a site on Shopiere Road in Beloit.
The goal of the Janesville sober living home is to provide a safe, structured environment for women who have completed treatment but still need support to become self-reliant.
Key said the organization is filling a gap in local services, as it will be the only sober living home in the area that accepts women and their children and offers case management.
The program is designed to be flexible, with no time limit on a resident’s stay. Instead, the focus is on developing life skills so women can transition to stable housing and employment.

“Our goal is really to get them to a place where they will be self-reliant,” Key said.
The program will require residents to meet weekly with a case manager, take financial literacy classes, and create a personal budget. The home will also offer life skills training including cooking, gardening, and resume writing.
Key said an intake process will determine if a woman is a good fit for the program. It will include an interview at which the person’s housing situation will be discussed, as well as their children’s custody status, and the type of addiction they have.
Women with an opioid addiction, for instance, would be required to be on a clear path to reduce their medication-assisted treatment.
Key acknowledged that some neighbors may have concerns about a sober living home in their area but emphasized that the residents are there by choice.
“This is a step forward in their lives,” she said, adding that a rigorous vetting process and the structure of the program will prevent issues with crime. “They’re there because they want a different life.”
The nonprofit takes possession of the house on Nov. 1 and hopes to open by Nov. 15. It is still in need of donations, including a stackable front-loader washer and dryer, dressers, bunk beds, and household and hygiene items.
Several fundraisers are underway to help it get ready for residents.
”Drive to Thrive”: Partnering with Rotary Botanical Gardens, this initiative offers a free admission ticket for every donation dropped off at participating locations, including the Janesville Athletic Club, Centerway Auto, and Blessed Divine Creations.
Amazon Wish List: An online wish list where people can purchase items like bedding, towels, and pillows is at =hz_ls_biz_ex
Donation Drives: Rock County Restorations is seeking businesses or churches in Janesville and Beloit to host donation drives.
All monetary and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. If interested in donating, text 53555 FUNDGAPS.
Rock County Restorations is now seeking to hire a case manager and also seeking to hire a house mother to live on-site in exchange for free rent. The house mother would serve as a liaison between the residents and Rock County Restorations.
