EVANSVILLE — J.C. McKenna Middle School in Evansville is 1 of 10 schools in the state, and 1 of 6 middle schools in the state, to receive the Wisconsin Association of School Councils Spirit of Excelence Award.
Association Executive Director Bjorn Berg made the announcement in a statement last Thursday, stating that all the schools are “true champions in their region and in our state.”
The award recognizes schools for achieving excellence in leadership, sportsmanship and service to their school and communities. McKenna Middle School is in the association’s Region V for middle schools.
“These schools are beacons of excellence for Wisconsin,” Berg wrote in the announcement.
Student leaders from around the state submitted a detailed portfolio to the association highlighting their achievements in multiple areas, including service, sportsmanship and positive culture, leadership in academics, athletics and fine arts, as well as development of leadership in and out of school, according to the announcement. The portfolios were judged by a team of leaders from Wisconsin.
Recognition for the awards includes banners for all recipients, on-court awards recognition during a Milwaukee Bucks game March 4 and an awards presentation at the association’s State Leadership Conference in Madison on April 7.
The overall state winner for middle schools was John R. Gerritts Middle School, which is in Kimberly in the Fox Cities. There is also a Senior High School class of recipients. The overall state winner of that class was Stevens Point Area Senior High School. The overall winners will receive trophies.
