MILTON — The Milton Common Council will consider on Tuesday a request from a citizen to allow people to keep backyard ducks.
The council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Milton City Hall, 710 S. Janesville St.
In letter submitted to the Mayor Eric Stockman, Milton resident Savannah Peters pointed out that city ordinance allows residents to have up to 8 chickens and up to 16 quail on their property.
“According to the city ordinance there is no discussion on owning ducks,” wrote Peters, going on in her letter to note the health benefits of duck eggs and their compatibility to backyard living, including that they are more tolerant than chickens to cold temperatures and “are also less destructive to yards because they don’t scratch and dig like chickens.”
Peters, in the letter, acknowledges that ducks would need to be of a variety that don’t fly in order to be kept in a backyard enclosure in a residential neighborhood.
Peters is asking that the city update its ordinance that regulates backyard animals to allow for up to eight ducks “of the flightless variety.”
Other matters
In other matters on Tuesday night, the Milton Common Council is scheduled to adopt the city’s 2026 budget. It also scheduled to discuss a proposed purchase of land in the city’s business park, financed through the Bank of Milton, at a total cost of just under $4 million.
