JANESVILLE — The Rock County Sheriff’s Office has officially retired K9 Kamo, one of the county’s most decorated and effective police dogs, after a hearing loss left him unable to safely continue serving.

K9 Kamo, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in November 2019, was medically retired on Nov. 13, 2025, following surgery that resulted in permanent hearing loss in his left ear.
Throughout his six-year career, Kamo was partnered exclusively with Deputy Cody St. Michael and was primarily assigned to the patrol division. He also served with the SWAT Team and the Highway Interdiction Team, providing support to numerous investigations and traffic operations across Rock County.
Kamo’s record of service is extensive. He was deployed 360 times, resulting in more than 180 arrests and assisted agencies throughout the region with vehicle contacts, drug seizures and suspect apprehensions. Kamo also regularly participated in community demonstrations and conducted drug-detection sniffs in every school in Rock County.
Among his many accomplishments, Kamo holds the agency’s record for the largest cocaine seizure during a traffic stop—6 kilograms (just over 13 pounds) discovered in 2023 after he alerted deputies to narcotics hidden in a duffle bag. That same alert remains the largest cocaine seizure documented by a Rock County K9 unit.

Other standout moments in his career include:
2020: During a traffic stop near the Janesville airport, Kamo alerted deputies to a vehicle whose driver was found carrying cocaine and a 9mm handgun. The driver, a convicted felon, was arrested for drug possession and unlawful possession of a firearm.
2022: Kamo helped Beloit police locate a fleeing suspect who had taken refuge in a shed officers had initially cleared. His alert led to the suspect’s discovery and surrender.
The sheriff's office described Kamo as "one of the county’s most successful K9s, noting his numerous commendations, letters of appreciation, and consistent performance in high-pressure situations."
As he transitions into retirement, Kamo will remain with Deputy St. Michael and his family.
The sheriff’s office continues to operate with K9 Jax and K9 Finn and has begun the process of acquiring another K9 to join the unit.
