MILTON — A home in the town of Milton is a total loss after a fire late Saturday.
The fire, in the Mallwood Estates subdivision on Road Five, was reported around 11:30 p.m. Saturday by an occupant of the home saying that flames on the outside were spreading rapidly.
Lakeside Fire and Rescue units from Edgerton and Milton were called to the fire, along with units from Janesville, Whitewater and Fort Atkinson. When crews arrived at the scene, they spotted flames that had already penetrated the home and through the roof of the structure.
The fire was extinguished at about 1:53 a.m., about an hour and 23 minutes after the original call. It took about 60,000 gallons of water to fight the fire.
The family is being helped by neighbors who have provided them with a place to stay temporarily. Lakeside also worked with Mercyhealth to help the family after losing medications in the fire.
Due to windy conditions, the proximity of other homes in the area and the subdivision not having fire hydrants, Lakeside received mutual aid from Stoughton, Delavan, La Grange, Darien, the town of Delavan, Elkhorn, Jefferson, Evansville and the town of Turtle. The city of Edgerton and town of Milton police departments assisted the Rock County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
Four people were at the home at the time of the fire, all of whom were able to exit without injury. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Wisconsin State Fire Marshall’s Office is assisting Lakeside in the investigation.
As of Sunday afternoon, fire personnel were still on the scene providing fire watch awaiting the arrival of the property owner’s insurance carrier to view the scene.
