Multiple witnesses and the two people told police that a third person was in the canoe that had capsized. They had surfaced briefly after the canoe capsized and were not seen again.

The police and fire departments sent out units along the banks of the river to search for that person, using tools including a dive team and dive boat with sonar.

After 20 minutes, the dive team located the body of the third canoeist, about an hour and 45 minutes after the initial call.

The West Milwaukee Street bridge was closed during the search.

The identities of the people involved were not released.

The scene was turned over to the Janesville Police Department and Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.
