JANESVILLE — The Rock Aqua Jays, a local water skiing team and the most decorated in the nation, are competing for their 24th national title at the 50th Show Ski Nationals. The event is being held at Traxler Park in Janesville from Aug. 8–10.
The team, which began as a casual boating group in 1953, evolved into a competitive show team in the 1960s. In 1975, two longtime members established the National Show Ski Tournament, which the Aqua Jays have since dominated. They were the first amateur team to complete a four-tier pyramid in 1981 and a five-tier pyramid in 1993.
The team is made up of groups of varying ages, with skiers ranging from 4-year-olds to people in their 60s. The group is made up of over 80 skiers.
The Rock Aqua Jays perform free shows on Sundays and Wednesdays at Traxler Park.
The 50th Show Ski Nationals kicks off Friday with individual competitions and opening ceremonies. Team events, with the Rock Aqua Jays opening the show, will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
