Although we could see a reprieve later this week in the a rainless spell that's lasted a month, soil conditions in south central Wisconsin have become parched, and have now officially tipped into pre-drought status.Â
Area farmers like Janesville's Doug Rebout say they are not immediately feeling the pain over soaring costs for diesel fuel and fertilizer. But if current prices don't fall off, Rebout predicting a 66% increase — an $80,000 jump overall — in his farm's diesel fuel costs in 2027.Â

“This delay has put the crops a little behind in growth," said Jordan Schuler, regional crop educator for UW-Extension Rock County.
