Since its inception more than two decades ago, there has been one overarching mission behind the Beloit International Film Festival, an annual extravaganza that has been showcasing disparate creative works and viewpoints from across the globe.
Our goal is just to create conversation, BIFF Acting Executive Director Sabrina Krejci said as final preparations are being made for this years five-day event that kicks off Wednesday, March 25, and runs through Sunday, March 29.
Unlike a traditional mainstream movie-going experience, Krejci said there is an inherent beauty in film festivals such as the BIFF. Directors, producers and actors behind some of the submissions are on hand to discuss what went into bringing the finished product to the big screen.
We encourage them to come to Beloit to participate in Q&As, Krejci said. Youre not going to get a traditional movie experience here where you go to a movie theater, just watch a film and dont really talk about it. Even when no one from a film is here, our volunteers will start conversations afterward.
More than 60 films will be screened throughout this years Beloit International Film Festival. In addition to closer-to-home entries in the U.S. and Canada, a sampling of this years screenings comes from such countries as Korea, Russia, Spain and the U.K.
As with most anything entering its third decade, the BIFF has gone through a series of logistical tweaks, even as the general mission has remained a focal point. In prior years, the festival spanned 10 days.
This year, were going back to the core of what we are, Krejci said of the revised schedule, which more closely resembles what it was like when the BIFF was in its infancy in an effort to best meet attendees expectations. Life has changed, and audiences have changed.
The placement of the BIFF also has been modified as part of an overture Krejci said is intended to help ensure audiences have the opportunity to see top-quality independent films. Unpredictable winter weather and provisions at some of the biggest international film festivals ultimately prompted the pivot from February to March.
We were finding a lot of people were running into premiere status issues with other festivals, Krejci said. By pushing back the dates of the festival, it gives us a little more wiggle room. It wound up opening our doors to more film selections that we were able to provide.
While the BIFF takes place over the course of five days, planning it is a far more extensive process. For example, screenings of confidential titles months in advance are held for audience feedback before the organizations Film Selection Committee makes final determinations.
For Krejci and the other staff and board members, the extensive planning work that goes into each years festival is a labor of love for Beloit and beyond.
Weve had this saying: We want to brig bring the world to Beloit, and Beloit to the world, Krejci said.
