JANESVILLE — After shooting 5-under-par in the first round of the 2025 Wisconsin Public Links Mid-Amateur Championship at Riverside Golf Course Saturday, Cory Aune of Lake Geneva played his way into contention for the title.
He then secured five birdies and an eagle in the front-nine alone in the second round on Sunday, the restaurateur and father of three swiftly finished 7-under-par en route to victory.
Through 36-holes, he carded a 132 to win his second WPLA Mid-Amateur title.
Aune started on the 10th hole. He eagled the fourth hole and then rattled off three consecutive birdies.
“I hit it really well (Saturday) and didn’t make much… Today I hit it not as good but the putter really caught fire.”
During his hot streak, Aune said he was thinking about all the putts he had missed in the previous weeks.
“Because I’ve been hitting the ball really well and just have not been able to get it in the hole,” Aune said. “So, it was nice to see them drop.”
“It’s always good to win. There’s a lot of great competitors out there and a lot of friends. Anyone of them has the ability to win too. It was just my day today.”
Parker alum places fifth
Graduating from Janesville Parker High School in 2018, Matt Zimmerman has played at Riverside many times, the first of which came when he was just four years old.
Zimmerman shot a 68 in both rounds to claim fifth place.
“The last two days have been the best I played this summer, for sure,” he said. “All four parts came together.”
Zimmerman finished tied for seventh after Round 1 and hung around the top golfers for most of Round 2. Through 15 holes, he was tied for second. On his last hole of the day, the ninth hole, he double bogeyed.
“Overall, I’m happy with my two days,” Zimmerman said. “I hate that I doubled hole nine to end. That would have been my first bogey-free round ever. So that hurts, but I’m still happy with my performance.”
Zimmerman had 8 birdies, two eagles and three bogeys over his two rounds of golf.
Other divisions
SeniotJim Doing of Verona shot 10-under-par across two rounds of golf to claim the championship in the Senior Division. Doing led after Round 1 with a score of 66 and shot a 68 in Round 2. Across two days of golf, Doing had 11 birdies or better and just one bogey.
Thomas Halla of Colgate shot 7-under-par to finish three strokes behind Doing and claimed second.
Scott Semingson of Eleva shot a 73 in Round 1 to finish tied for third in the Super Senior Division. His Round 2 performance featured six birdies en route to a score of 69 and a championship.
Mike Fischbach also finished tied for third after the first round. He would go on to take second place, shooting 143 across the two days.
Dominic Carini of Waukesha and Marc Casper of Okauchee each shot a 142 across both days in the Legend Division.
