JANESVILLE — Blackhawk Technical College will be known as the “Blackhawk Talons†when its athletic teams hit the courses and courts this fall, as the school steps into collegiate sports for the first time.
The college made the announcement during an all-student picnic on Wednesday after surveying students, staff and faculty, as well as the general public through its Blackhawk Magazine.

According to a statement released Thursday, the decision to adopt “Talons†reflects the college’s “spirit of determination, strength and agility, symbolized by the fierce-looking hawk featured in the newly unveiled athletics logo.â€
“The launch of the Talons is part of a new chapter for us as we strive to amplify the value of a Blackhawk education. It’s a key component to enrich student life and foster a stronger sense of community for Blackhawk students,†Blackhawk President Tracy Pierner said.
The college announced in February that it was launching a sports program that would compete in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) in Region 4 at the Division II level. The college will offer men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, co-ed clay target shooting, women’s volleyball and co-ed bowling.
The golf team will use Riverside Golf Course as its home course. The bowling team will use RiversEdge Bowl as its home. The clay target shooting team will practice and compete from the Janesville Conservation Club. A new gymnasium in Blackhawk’s Public Safety Center will be the home court for the volleyball and basketball teams.
