MILTON — As it searches for its next superintendent, the School District of Milton has set two meeting dates for community focus groups. It also plans to send out a community survey to gauge what people are looking for in a new superintendent.
The focus group meetings will be Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 7-7:45 p.m. at the Milton High School LMC, 114 W. High St. The second will be on Sunday Feb. 15 from 7-7:45 p.m., which be held virtually.
The community survey will be available on Feb. 2. According to a timeline given on the district website, the district plans to make the survey available to community members through Feb. 13.
The district will distribute links to to the survey and to the Feb. 15 virtual focus group at a later date, according to a release. Focus groups are expected to consist of staff, students and community members.
According to the website, the focus groups will be asked about the strengths of the school district that the next superintendent can build upon, what challenges the district has the next superintendent should be aware of or should address and what characteristics the new superintendent should possess.
At Monday’s meeting, Board President Annette Smith said the focus groups will “give us feedback on what you’d like to see from a new superintendent.”
The board has hired Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in assisting school districts, colleges and universities, to support it in the search to replace Rich Dahman, who will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year.
“HYA facilitators are not Milton staff and are leading the groups and collecting survey data to ensure a neutral and inclusive process,” the release said.
A superintendent search committee will report to the board with feedback from HYA after information is gathered from the focus groups.
The job vacancy was posted at the Wisconsin Association of School Boards Conference in Milwaukee last week. Miller said interviews have been scheduled.
This report has been updated to have the correct name of the board president.
