MILTON — About $1.6 million is being requested for building upgrades as part of the School District of Milton’s capital maintenance plan, which is for infrastructure more than 30 years old.
Action by the school board on the proposed projects could come as soon as Feb. 9. The school board typically meets at the district office, 448 E. High St.
Of the proposed amount, $330,030 is on the table for Northside Intermediate School, where exterior doors haven’t been replaced since the school opened in 1993. The anticipated cost of new doors is just over $13,000. Also proposed is the changing over of heating, ventilation and cooling controls from pneumatic to digital at a cost of $297,500.
“That is the last of our pneumatic controls, so we’ll be a 100% digital-control district, which will be very exciting. It took about 10 years or so to get through the district, so this is a bit of a large accomplishment for us,” said Stephen Schantz, the school district’s director of buildings and grounds
Also at Northside, flooring in the art rooms and associated areas, original to the building, would be replaced for just over $28,000.
Just under $374,000 is proposed to be spent for the first of three phases of lighting replacements at Schilberg Park. That entails retrofitting existing poles to LED lighting. The existing poles were installed in 1998.
About $293,000 is proposed to be spent on projects at Milton High School, including about $264,000 for roof work. Another $29,000 is slated for two rooftop air handlers, replacing equipment from the 1980s and 1990s and converting them to natural gas from electric.
The middle school’s proposed allocation is $315,000. Of that, the ceiling, lighting and paint in the east and north gym hallways would be replaced for $25,000.
Also at the middle school, flooring and stair treads in the upper-level hallways and classrooms would be replaced, as well as ceiling, lighting and paint in the upper level hallways, at a cost of $290,000. Schantz called the work on the upper level “Phase 1” because similar plans are in place for 2027-28.
The proposed allocation for East Elementary is $170,000. Of that, $90,000 would be spent to replace the air handler unit and add air conditioning in the gym. The existing air handler was installed in 1958. Another $80,000 is slated for adding air conditioning to the cafeteria.
“That is just continuing on our goals and priorities to get through all of our elementary schools to add air conditioning in all common spaces. This a feasible goal to deal with over the next few years and we continue to move toward that,” Schantz said.
Also proposed is $115,000 for West Elementary to replace two air handler units and add air conditioning. The air handler units date back to 1966.
“We definitely got our money’s worth out of all those mechanical systems,” Schantz said.
There are no projects proposed for Consolidated and Harmony elementary schools.
