JANESVILLE — SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital — Janesville and Rock County Public Health this week unveiled a new harm reduction vending machine for the community.
“All vending machine supplies are offered discreetly and anonymously. Community members are welcome to access the resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in the hospital’s Emergency Department waiting room,” a release said.
The special vending machine at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital — Janesville, 3400 E. Racine St., houses free supplies such as naloxone nasal spray to reverse opioid overdoses, fentanyl test kits, HIV test kits, drug disposal bags, gun locks, education and more.
“This harm reduction vending machine shows our organizations’ dedication to meeting people where they are and opening resources to tools that could help save lives,” said SSM Health Community Health Director Megan Timm.
“We hope the machine being in this space encourages more community members to seek help without fear of judgment,” Timm said.
Rock County overdose deaths have declined over the past several years, but drug use and nonfatal overdoses continue to be a challenge for many local communities, the release noted. Fentanyl is being found in more than 50% of Rock County’s overdose deaths.
Signarama has provided instructions for the harm reduction vending machine, and users may simply scan a QR code to learn how to administer naloxone nasal spray. The videos are available in English and Spanish.
“Everyone should have access to tools that support their health, no matter their circumstances,” said Katrina Harwood, director of Rock County Public Health. “This vending machine makes it easier for people to get what they need in a quick and private way … we’re grateful to partner with SSM Health to bring this life-saving resource directly to the community.”
