JANESVILLE — The standards for new development under the city’s proposed new zoning and subdivision code will be the focus of a presentation before the Janesville Plan Commission Monday night.
Consulting firm GRAEF will make a presentation to the commission at its meeting that begins at 6 p.m. Monday in the fourth floor council chambers at City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St.
Commissioners will review several key areas, including architectural and dimensional standards, landscaping and site design requirements, and other related regulations.
The purpose of the review is to gauge the Plan Commission’s general support for the development standards as they are proposed in the zoning and subdivision code rewrite.
The proposed new code, available in its current draft form on the city’s website, , aims to modernize development standards, create more flexibility for different housing types and clarify review processes for both developers and city staff.
According to a timeline on the city’s project website, community open houses are slated to be scheduled in December and January leading up to adoption of the new zoning and subdivision code in January or February.
The meeting will be livestreamed on the city’s website and Janesville Access Television (JATV), and recorded for viewing at the City website, .
According to documents attached to the meeting agenda, Janesville’s current zoning ordinance was adopted in 1981, with parts of the subdivision ordinance written in the 1970s.
“The current zoning ordinance is in need of a substantial update in order to provide greater opportunity for continued growth and success of the community,” the city says in a note on its website.
The city of Janesville recently updated the comprehensive plan “setting a vision for the future of the community including potential changes to the zoning code and subdivision ordinance,” the city says on the website.
“An updated Janesville land development code will be simplified, responsive to market conditions, and facilitate high-quality development.”
