Veterans will be honored locally this week with a host of ceremonies and events. Here are some planned events in area communities:
BELOIT
Hometown Heroes: The West-Field American Legion Post 48 will host a Hometown Heroes event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the American Legion at 236 St. Lawrence Ave. George Wood, an Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War era, will be honored. Wood has been a member of the Legion for more than 30 years. Wood will be presented with a yard sign featuring his photograph and information about him. He will receive other honors at the event.
Veterans Dinner: Beloit American Legion Post 48 and the Montford Point Marines will host a Veterans Dinner from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Stateline Cafe, 121 Dearborn St. During the event, veterans will wait on tables, wash dishes and complete other tasks as they provide meals for free to veterans who attend.
EDGERTON
Library program: The Edgerton Public Library will host a Veterans Day program on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 6-8 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dave Desimone, speaking on “The Great War: Anti-German Hysteria and Conflict on the Home Front.” The event is open to the public and there is no charge to attend. The Edgerton Public Library is located at 101 Albion St., Edgerton.
JANESVILLE
VFW observance and lunch: VFW POST #1621 in Janesville will host its Veterans Day Celebration Saturday, Nov. 15, starting at 11 a.m. with a Quilts of Valor presentation, followed by a free lunch for all veterans and their spouses from 1-3 p.m. and live entertainment by Notchey Creek from 3-6 p.m. VFW Post #1621 is located at 1015 Center Ave., Janesville.
MILTON
Veterans Day Lunch: The Gathering Place, 715 Campus St., in Milton, is hosting a Veteran’s Day Lunch on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 12-1 p.m. The program will feature a guest speaker, music and a color guard. Advance registration is requested. For more information visit .
UW-WHITEWATER
Whitewater will honor veterans and their families with a series of events on campus this week, including:
“Fur, Feathers and Fidelity: Military Mascots” is a traveling exhibit loaned from the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and in partnership with UW-Whitewater Veteran Services honors the animals that have stood faithfully beside service members throughout history.
- Roberta’s Art Gallery/University Center, Monday through Thursday, Nov. 10 through Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee and pastries will be served on the morning of Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11.
- Veterans Day Ceremony: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Hamilton Room/University Center. Cupcakes, refreshments, and the “Mission: Warhawk Sweet Support” candy buffet will follow. Veteran and military-member students receive a free lunch voucher for use in any campus dining hall. At 1:30 p.m., Chancellor King will meet with veteran and military students in the Veteran Lounge, Andersen Library.
- Write a thank you note to UWW veterans: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Veteran Services table/University Center.
- Vietnam veteran Paul Jones speaks on “The Luck of the Draw: Reflections on My Experience in Viet Nam, 1970-71,” Thursday, Nov. 13, from 12-12:50 p.m. in the Hyatt Smith Commons at UW-Whitewater at Rock County.
The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) will be on the UW-Whitewater campus along the mall between the fountain and the University Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, offering support and resources to UW-Whitewater veterans, assisting them in accessing the benefits, services, and assistance they have earned.
